Fastelavnsboller

Just a quick post to show you what fastelavnsboller look like.

I found the pastry not too dry, the cream filling airy and mousse-like, and not too sweet on a whole. I could really taste the creaminess of the filling.

I really enjoyed eating this, but my French friends were not overly impressed. They were curious about the tradition and surprised when they first saw this dessert (it does look impressive!), but I know what they were feeling because they didn't say anything. If a French person likes something, they will talk about it. They love spending hours talking about food. And if they don't say anything, well...

  1. Looks good but I'm not a huge fan of cream. I like my cakes "bread-y"!

    1. It's a really heavy dessert, full of calories and fat. You're probably better off not being a huge fan of cream!

I'm so addicted to brioche that it's been banned in our home.

  2. Hi, is it like pâte à choux or croissant? My French husband would say: ce n'est pas très fin. I'm not surprised your friends kept it quiet. What can I say, French people think they own pâtisserie. lol

    1. Hi and thanks for reading!

I would say that it's a cross between pâte à choux and pâte feuilletée.

My husband said there was too much cream and that the pâte was too dry. I don't share his point of view, though!

With the French I find that even if a pastry or dessert from another country is good, I almost always hear the following set phrase, "c'est bon, mais ça n'a rien à voir avec ce qu'on a en France."

Ok, ok, we know that France has the best pâtisseries, could we just not mention that every single time and give the foreign dessert a chance?

    2. I actually just realised that I've read your blog, but for some reason haven't visited in a while. You're from the Ottawa region too, right?

I can relate to a lot of your posts, especially the ones about your weight issues.

    3. yes, I'm from Ottawa, but lived many years on the other side of the river. So don't know if I consider myself a Québécoise or an Ontarian....À bientôt.

    1. I love almost all foods, too, a little bit too much even!

      I don't think there's a dessert I don't like!

Wow, your Frenchie loves everything! Even North American and exotic food?

    1. Imagine you are eating a chocolate mousse. This cream was like the French chocolate mousse, only it was white and tasted like vanilla.

      It was heaven for me!
